Production Notes

Welcome to Castaway's production of Love's Labours Lost. Earlier this year, the company met to discuss our summer project. It was suggested that we have a stab at Shakespeare. Initially I found the idea a little daunting! However, the company seemed so enthusiastic about the idea that I was soon persuaded. One of our company members, Susan Chapman, had directed a school production of Love's Labours Lost and she suggested that this would be an idea play for us to produce. It is fair to say that the play is rarely performed and I was slightly worried that out of my knowledge of Shakespeare this was one play that I knew absolutely nothing about. Also, when I started to study the play I realised how difficult the language could be...

As the weeks have progressed, I have found discovering this play to be a complete joy. Deciphering the language has been a wonderful learning curve and was nowhere near as difficult as I first thought. Indeed, this is a play about language and part of the comic element emerges from Shakespeare's immensely witty send-up of academic snobbery - particularly with his treatment of the character of Holofernes. In brief, we have tried to realise the rich comic vein that runs through what I now believe to be one of Shakespeare's wittiest and unique plays. We hope you enjoy!
