About the Play
from the programme:
During the summer Castaway held a series of weekly workshops with existing and new members. Many of these exercises involved developing improvisational abilities and looking a different ways of building characters and narratives. This led to the suggestion that we could devise a piece of theatre, instead of using an existing script as we had always done previously. We decided that the play would examine the effects of war on those who become caught up in it. Although On the Border
is not specifically about the current situation in the former Yugoslavia, the events that have unfolded there while we have been working on it have inevitably coloured much of the material.
We started work on the play in early September. The material has come from a variety of sources; some parts began as improvised scenes which were then scripted and rehearsed, some grew from images which had appeared in workshops, some from particular images, characters or issues which individual members were interested in pursuing, others out developed out of 'abstract' exercises. Some parts of the play are the work of one person, most are the work of two, three or the whole company.
Played as a double bill with Leonardos Last Supper. Toured to the Tabernacl in Machynlleth.
